Lady Young Road safe now, says Minister
The final cutting of the hill that caused last week’s landslides was done last night and the Lady Young Road in Morvant is now officially reopened and deemed safe to all commuters.
This was disclosed to the T&T Guardian by Works Minister Rohan.
Last week Wednesday, a major landslide occurred at about 1.53 pm at approximately ? mile up from the Morvant Junction.
A second occurred the next day at about 2 am. Throughout the day that day rubble and pieces of shrubs were seen slipping onto the roadway intermittently, which proved it even more dangerous to commuters.
As a result, the Priority Bus Route was opened up to only light vehicles until further notice, between Abbattoir Road, Port-of-Spain and Morvant Junction for two subsequent days as an immediate relief measure.
Engineer Dr Derek Gay had given reason for the landslides saying that the hill was undercutting at the most porous part of the rock where the trees/roots ware embedded. He added that the silt was washing out therefore resulting in the “brittle mass” and “unstable state.”
He also said that the rocks were cracking and even pointed out an area that hovers over the already slipped land on the verge of collapse.
