Five female Special Reserve Police (SRPs), who were detained as part of an investigation into fraudulent extra duty claims, have been released.
Guardian Media understands that the SRPs were released by detectives of the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) after they received advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), on Friday.
Sources said that a male police officer, who was assigned revenue clerk in the T&T Police Service (TTPS) payroll department, remained in custody as investigators got instructions from the DPP’s Office to charged him over the scam.
While the charges were not laid, up to late yesterday, Guardian Media understands that he is expected to be charged with several offences of misbehaviour in public office by falsifying records. He is expected to be charged over the weekend and will appear in court, next week.
A senior superintendent, who allegedly signed off on the claims, is alleged also under investigation.
The investigation centred around inflated overtime claims made by the officers for extra duty services which were supposed to be performed during the Christmas 2018 and Carnival 2019.
The officers, who were all last assigned to the Highway Patrol and Traffic Branch in Port-of-Spain, were detained between Tuesday night and Wednesday and were housed in different police stations along the east/west corridor.
The officers were represented by lawyers including Pamela Elder, SC, Ian Brooks, Brent Winter, Terry Boyer and Fareed Ali.
PC Joefield of the PSB is investigating the case.
