A Pleasantville woman caught in a viral video struggling with police officers has been granted $50,000 bail on four charges arising from the incident in which she allegedly injured two officers.
Diana Alexander, 25, a hairstylist, is accused of biting a policeman three times on his left arm and injuring the hand of another officer. Shortly after the incident last month, video clips of the incident began circulating on social media.
Alexander, however, pleaded not guilty to the four charges, as well as an additional charge, when she appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates Court on Friday.
The incident took place on July 18 near Alexander’s home at Building C, Orchid Gardens, Pleasantville.
The charges include resisting PC Avidesh Narine in the execution of his duty, assaulting PC Narine and De Boulay to prevent the lawful detention of herself and maliciously damaging Narine’s $1,500 gold chain and $400 jersey.
Alexander faced another charge that on a date unknown between July 27 and August 8 at Pleasantville she allegedly received a $1,999 cellphone knowing it to be stolen.
The charges were laid by PC Nanan, PC Pulchan and WPC Flemming. There was also a warrant for her arrest for failing to attend court in a marijuana matter in March 2018.
Her attorney Ainsley Lucky told Senior Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor that his client had gone to the United Kingdom to seek treatment for an injury to her face which had left her with scars.
Lucky said when she returned in September 2018 she was disoriented.
She also has a pending robbery matter at the Couva Magistrates Court.
Prosecutor Cleyon Seedan did not object to bail.
The magistrate granted her $50,000 bail with a cash bail alternative of $10,000 to cover the five charges.
She was also ordered to report to the Mon Repos Police Station on Saturdays.
On the warrant matter, she was granted $10,000 bail.
The matter was adjourned to September 13.
