Two police officers being investigated under the Anti-Gang Act have lost their legal challenge over detention orders against them.
Delivering a 23-page ruling in the San Fernando High Court yesterday, High Court Judge Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds dismissed the application to set aside the orders against the officers.
The officers were among three who were detained by detectives of Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit (OCIU) at the Arouca Police Station last Friday.
The T&T Guardian understands that investigators applied under section 17 (5) the legislation for detention orders for the three officers last Sunday.
The orders, which mean that the officers could be held without charge for an additional 11 days (until March 8), were granted by Ramsumair-Hinds without a hearing.
In her order, Ramsumair-Hinds ruled that investigators were working diligently and expeditiously and that there were reasonable grounds for justifying the officers' continued detention. Only two of the officers have challenged her decision thus far.
Legal sources said that on Monday, another order was sought and granted for a civilian who is also under investigation.
The officers were represented by Ulric Skerritt and Thalia Francis-Brooks. Ravi Rajcoomar and Christian Chandler represented the TT Police Service.
