However, relatives are claiming that Ricardo Ramsumair, also known as Dan, was ambushed inside of his house and allegedly shot and killed by a police officer.
According to a police report, at about 3.30 am policemen from Homicide Region 2, led by Cpl Jones and other officers were on enquiries along Wharf Trace, Maracas St Joseph, when they approached a house.
The report said one of the officers was attacked by Ramsumair, 31. Ramsumair, police said had been wanted for the murder of Douglas Ellie in St Augustine on October 19, 2020.
One of the officers shot Ramsumair. He and the injured officer were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. Ramsumair died. Senior officers visited the scene and investigations are continuing.
During a visit to the area yesterday and speaking with members of the media Ramsumair’s common-law-wife Shakira John claimed the police officers forced their way into the house and as Ramsumair walked out of the bedroom he was shot.
“The police came in and ransacked the house. They said they were looking for a red mobile cellphone but they got none and Dan had no cellphone as the police had taken his away from him about two months ago,” she said.
She added: “As Dan walked out of the bedroom one of the officers shot him and he fell on another officer and with the fall the couch broke down with him on top of the police. There was no chopping. Dan did not chop any police officer. He was not armed with anything.”
Ramsumair’s mother Lydia lamented how the police left Dan’s five children without a father.
John described her son as a kind and loving individual.
