The gun of a police officer fired off as the patrol car he was in hit a speed bump, blowing off one of his toes on Tuesday.
The officer is currently warded at the Port of Spain General Hospital.
According to a police report, at about 1 am on Tuesday the officer along with two other officers were on patrol at MovieTowne, Invader's Bay, when they received a call that a gunman was spotted at Waterhole, Cocorite.
While speeding off in response to the call the police vehicle hit a speed bump near the Mariott Hotel.
One of the officers, upon impact, lost his grip on his high powered weapon and while trying to retrieve it a round of 5.56 ammunition accidentally discharged.
He was shot in the left foot, the bullet severing the middle toe.
The officers subsequently went to the St James Medical Facility instead where they sought help for their colleague.
The wounded officer was then transferred to the general hospital.
It is unsure as to whether or not the doctors reattached the toe.
