East Port-of-Spain De­vel­op­ment Com­pa­ny Lim­it­ed (EPOS) of­fi­cials say they are proud of two Sea Lots men, who they com­mend­ed for their hero­ic ef­forts and self­less ac­tions in the res­cue of a dri­ver from a car wreck.

EPOS of­fi­cials added that the men are ex­am­ples of the “strength of East Port-of-Spain.”

De­shawn Hamil­ton, 28, and Ter­rance David, 43, were near Pro­duc­tion Av­enue on the north­bound lane of the Beetham High­way last Thurs­day when they wit­nessed a car crash.

With­out hes­i­ta­tion and de­spite the risk of an ex­plo­sion, the two men rushed to the scene af­ter the car’s en­gine ig­nit­ed and pulled a po­lice of­fi­cer from the wreck­age. The ve­hi­cle lat­er burst in­to flames.

On Mon­day, EPOS chair­man Hillan More­an and deputy gen­er­al man­ag­er Nis­sa Hosten-James host­ed a cer­e­mo­ny at the com­pa­ny’s Laven­tille of­fice, where Hamil­ton and David were pre­sent­ed with to­kens of ap­pre­ci­a­tion for their life-sav­ing ef­forts.

EPOS, which fo­cus­es on com­mu­ni­ty de­vel­op­ment in East Port-of-Spain, felt the men’s brav­ery de­served recog­ni­tion.

In a state­ment is­sued on Tues­day, Hosten-James was quot­ed as say­ing, “We are in­cred­i­bly proud of the courage dis­played by De­shawn Hamil­ton and Ter­rance David. Their ac­tions re­flect the best of our com­mu­ni­ty—self­less­ness, brav­ery, and hu­man­i­ty. At EPOS, we be­lieve in recog­nis­ing those who con­tribute pos­i­tive­ly, par­tic­u­lar­ly from com­mu­ni­ties that are of­ten mis­rep­re­sent­ed.

“Their hero­ism is a shin­ing ex­am­ple of the re­silience and strength of East Port-of-Spain.”

Hamil­ton and David were ap­pre­cia­tive of the to­kens, which they de­scribed as “mean­ing­ful.”

The men said they hoped their act of brav­ery would help chal­lenge the neg­a­tive per­cep­tions peo­ple have of the Sea Lots com­mu­ni­ty.

“Peo­ple think one wrong in Sea Lots means every­body’s to blame,” said David.

“I hope this shows that there are good peo­ple in our com­mu­ni­ty who are ready to help oth­ers, no mat­ter the risk.”

EPOS chair­man More­an echoed these sen­ti­ments, em­pha­sis­ing the need to high­light the pos­i­tive con­tri­bu­tions from East Port-of-Spain res­i­dents, many of whom he said con­tin­ue to be un­fair­ly judged by broad­er so­ci­ety.

More­an said Hamil­ton and David’s sto­ry serves as a pow­er­ful re­minder that hero­ism knows no bound­aries and that courage can emerge from even the most un­ex­pect­ed places.
