East Port-of-Spain Development Company Limited (EPOS) officials say they are proud of two Sea Lots men, who they commended for their heroic efforts and selfless actions in the rescue of a driver from a car wreck.
EPOS officials added that the men are examples of the “strength of East Port-of-Spain.”
Deshawn Hamilton, 28, and Terrance David, 43, were near Production Avenue on the northbound lane of the Beetham Highway last Thursday when they witnessed a car crash.
Without hesitation and despite the risk of an explosion, the two men rushed to the scene after the car’s engine ignited and pulled a police officer from the wreckage. The vehicle later burst into flames.
On Monday, EPOS chairman Hillan Morean and deputy general manager Nissa Hosten-James hosted a ceremony at the company’s Laventille office, where Hamilton and David were presented with tokens of appreciation for their life-saving efforts.
EPOS, which focuses on community development in East Port-of-Spain, felt the men’s bravery deserved recognition.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Hosten-James was quoted as saying, “We are incredibly proud of the courage displayed by Deshawn Hamilton and Terrance David. Their actions reflect the best of our community—selflessness, bravery, and humanity. At EPOS, we believe in recognising those who contribute positively, particularly from communities that are often misrepresented.
“Their heroism is a shining example of the resilience and strength of East Port-of-Spain.”
Hamilton and David were appreciative of the tokens, which they described as “meaningful.”
The men said they hoped their act of bravery would help challenge the negative perceptions people have of the Sea Lots community.
“People think one wrong in Sea Lots means everybody’s to blame,” said David.
“I hope this shows that there are good people in our community who are ready to help others, no matter the risk.”
EPOS chairman Morean echoed these sentiments, emphasising the need to highlight the positive contributions from East Port-of-Spain residents, many of whom he said continue to be unfairly judged by broader society.
Morean said Hamilton and David’s story serves as a powerful reminder that heroism knows no boundaries and that courage can emerge from even the most unexpected places.
