Police Constable Renaul Dobson and his father Michael, were inseparable. They joined the Police Service together, trained together and held a passion for serving their country. On Sunday, however, the life of the 26-year-old man was tragically snuffed out when a female motorist ploughed into him. Dobson, a Special Reserve Police (SRP) officer, was struck by a white Lexus car driven by a 25-year-old student of the University of the West Indies, St Augustine. Dobson and his colleague, WPC Wendy Thomas, were conducting traffic duties on the Solomon Hochoy Highway when they were hit just after midday.
Up to late yesterday, Lewis was listed in serious condition at the San Fernando General Hospital. As tears streamed down his face, Michael said his son's death has left an emptiness in his soul, a void that could never be filled. "I love my son, my son loved me. We wrote the police exams together and trained together," Michael said at his home at Ghany Road, Chandanagore, Chase Village. Michael who had just witnessed his son's post mortem said he was "disgusted" by the high incidents of recklessness on the nation's roads. He charged that the female motorist blatantly flaunted the law by overtaking a long line of traffic. He added: "Some person watching a line of traffic, a line of traffic on the highway and overtake all those vehicles and kill my son. "In all my years I see this happening, people just driving on the shoulder.
"Now I lost my son. I want something to be done about that. Something must to be done," Michael demanded. Calling for stringent measures to be implemented immediately to clamp down on dangerous driving, Michael said too many innocent lives were being senselessly lost. Cradling his wife, Zorina, Michael vowed not to rest until the perpetrator was brought to justice. Zorina, who cried incessantly, described her son as "an angel and a hard worker." She added: "My son was an angel in disguise. It have nothing bad I could say about him. He never smoke or drink. "He was the perfect son and someone just destroyed his life. I want justice. My son is dead," Zorina cried. Saying she was constantly worried about her son's safety, Zorina said: "He always will say he can handle himself. But this was totally unexpected."
Dobson, the younger of two sons, shared a special bond with his father, Zorina said. "His father is in the Police Service and my son always wanted to be in the (police) force. "He would always say that God blessed him with a good job," Zorina said. She said her son left for work Sunday morning "very happy. "Then I got a phone call that he was knocked down but by the time I got to the hospital my son was already dead," Zorina added. The death of the young constable also shattered impending marriage plans. "My son was working hard and saving his money to get married early next year. He was looking forward to starting a family," Zorina said. Giselle Dass, Dobson's fianc, who wept openly, said: "He was the best boyfriend anyone could ask for."
