A businessman is currently being evicted from a property at Oropune Gardens in Piarco by officials of the Housing Development Corporation and the police.
Anthony Knights was operating a hardware and a commercial shop from his apartment at Building 3A in the housing development before the HDC moved in early Wednesday morning.
Guardian Media was told he was given several warnings that his activity was illegal before by the HDC along with an eviction notice.
Knights, who is an amputee, said he has been living there for eight years and recently held a meeting with HDCs managing director Brent Lyons.
Speaking to Guardian Media as HDC officials and the police were in the process of demolishing the structure where he was operating his businesses from, Knights said he was a father of four children and was only trying to earn an honest living.
Oropune Gardens was thrown into the spotlight recently after residents appealed to the HDC and the police to increase security there after a spate of killings rocked the community. Some of them complained that they were being besieged by the criminal elements and were even fearful of using the public facilities in the community.
