Tobago police are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of an elderly, mentally-challenged man who was hit by a car along John Dial, Tobago.
Dead is Brian Thomas, 60, a handyman of John Dial, Tobago.
According to police reports, shortly before 8 pm on Thursday, Keno Alleyne, of Glen Road Scarborough, was driving his Nissan Navarra in an easterly direction along the Windward Main Road in John Dial near the Fairy Queen pub.
Alleyne told police Thomas suddenly attempted to cross from the northern side to the southern side of the roadway.
Alleyne swerved to avoid hitting Thomas but came into contact with a vehicle driven by Donny Walcott, which was proceeding in a westerly direction.
Eyewitnesses said Thomas was still hit and thrown on the southern side of the roadway. He suffered severe injuries to his head and body and died on the spot.
District Medical Officer Dr Fidelis Okali visited the scene and ordered the body removed to the Scarborough Hospital Mortuary.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
Guardian Media understands that Walcott, a landscaper of Bon Accord, was also given a breathalyser test which gave a reading of zero.
Tobago’s road fatality count now stands at three for 2019.
Investigations are continuing.
