A Special Reserve Officer, who was attempting to be a “peacemaker” during an argument between two customers of a supermarket in Sangre Grande was shot and wounded on Monday afternoon.
A retired police officer has since been detained and up to press time was said to be in police custody assisting them with their investigations.
According to a police report, at about 3.20 pm the victim Christopher Maharaj, assigned to the Emergency Response Patrol Unit at the Sangre Grande Police Station, was at One Plus One Supermarket located at LP#9 Foster Road when he attempted to quell a dispute between two customers in the carpark.
Police said, Maharaj of Eastern Main Road, Manzanilla, got into an altercation with one of them - a 61-year-old, retiree of Harry Dass Road, off Ojoe Road, Sangre Grande, who is the holder of a licensed Glock pistol during which the suspect drew his licensed firearm and discharged several rounds of ammunition.
Maharaj, although sustaining injuries to both his legs, was able to relieve the suspect of his firearm and with the assistance of residents from the area was able to subdue him and hand him over to responding police officers.
A party of officers under the Supervision of ASP Revanales responded and took Maharaj to the Sangre Grande District Hospital for medical attention. The suspect was also taken into custody.
Police recovered and seized one Glock pistol with eight rounds of 9 mm ammunition. Several items of evidential value were also seized.
Sgt Harper is continuing enquiries.
