Reno Ramsubhag, 19, got up yesterday morning not only to go to work, but for a special task—to pick up his pregnant girlfriend from the clinic.
Sadly, Ramsubhag, a driver at a Siparia sawmill, was gunned down near his Penal home around 5.45 am as he entered his company’s van to leave for work.
The Nissan Frontier was parked along Jhulai Trace, Penal Rock Road.
He lived with his father.
Police said he was sitting in the driver’s seat when he was shot. Ramsubhag’s father heard the gunshots and ran outside to find his son slumped over the front passenger seat bleeding from wounds to the head. A man was seen running from the scene.
Police said Ramsubhag was not known to be involved in any criminal activities.
While investigators try to ascertain a motive, relatives were also clueless as to why someone would want him dead.
In an interview with Guardian Media, his 19-year-old girlfriend, who did not want to be named, said she last spoke to him on her cellphone around 3 am.
The young woman, who is due to give birth to their first baby, a girl, in July, said they had planned to get married soon after the baby was born. While she still lives with her parents, she was gradually moving her belongings into his home.
In preparation for his new family, Ramsubhag was renovating his bedroom.
“This morning, he supposed to come for me in the clinic for me to go home by him, because I had clinic in Penal,” she lamented.
She said the strange thing is that she had pain around the time that he was murdered.
“I get up early and I don’t get pain but randomly this morning, around 5.45, the baby start to pain, like real bad, and I get up and watch around to make sure nothing there. Ten minutes later, I get a call saying that he died,” she said.
Describing him as a decent and hardworking person, she said as far she knew, he had no issues with anyone.
Ramsubhag’s cousin, who also requested anonymity, said he was the only child of his father.
While they want justice, she said, “At the end of the day, it would just be another person die that went under the mat and nothing would come out of it. Thing happening and people afraid to speak out about it.”
Noting that Ramsubhag’s birthday will be on May 29, she said they had planned to celebrate together since her birthday is five days before his. Police sources said a few weeks ago, Ramsubhag was the victim of a robbery at his workplace.
Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 are investigating.
