The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Services has advised that rainy weather forecast for this weekend, should give citizens a much-needed break from a moderate to a high concentration of Saharan dust present over the Caribbean region.
But he said despite the expected moisture in the atmosphere, conditions could get hazy again come Monday.
On Friday meteorologist Gary Benjamin said because of the hazy and dusty conditions, visibility was down to roughly seven or eight kilometres.
While he urged the population not to panic and to remain calm, the met services meteorologist said, “those who need to take their medication should have it with them.”
Despite the low visibility yesterday, Benjamin said motorists should be able to operate “fairly normal” but he cautioned that “the dust film on the surface of the road could reduce the friction and therefore motorists would have to be careful”.
He added those with respiratory ailments and other vulnerable groups also needed to take extra care during the current dust episode. However, he said the air quality was not that poor but the “concentration of dust was high enough for effects to show up or aggravate some people in the at-risk group”.
Benjamin also said although there was no need for the population to remain indoors, those who did not have to be outside should minimise their exposure to the dust.
