Even though he admitted to ruffling some feathers as mayor, Junia Regrello says he is satisfied that he has initiated positive changes for the growth of San Fernando.
Speaking at a service held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church on Sunday, Regrello said San Fernando had suffered over the years because of neglect and dishonour.
“Some citizens and businesses, have flaunted the rules, by encroaching on public spaces for private gain. Reckless abandonment and blatant disrespect for the law, illegal vending, indiscriminate parking, congestion and overall, a loss of love for the environment,” he said.
He added, “Homeless persons allowed to run wild, while being fed three square meals per day by citizens who are unaware that they are contributing to littering. Communities are now less friendly, and individuals straying from the light of God saddens me. Is this our city?” he asked.
He said he was convinced that like other mayors before him, he had done a good deal for the city by addressing traffic congestion through the widening of roadways along the promenade, bringing business opportunities for entrepreneurs, bringing back music and the arts to the streets as well as honouring great San Fernandians.
Regrello said even though he ruffled some feathers, in the end through co-operation and strengthening bonds, burgesses can see a better tomorrow.
During the service several San Fernandians received awards. These included Chairman Emeritus of JT Allum and Company Limited Carl Mack, chief executive officer of the Centre for Persons with Disabilities Dr Beverly Beckles, Association of Funeral Professionals of Trinidad and Tobago president Keith Belgrove and valedictorian Marcus Bridgemohansingh.
