A senior prison officer with close to 30 years of service was detained outside the Remand Prison in Golden Grove, Arouca on Tuesday evening.
Sources told Guardian Media that the police officers acting on a tip intercepted the officer along the Golden Grove Road, near the prison and allegedly confiscated contraband in his possession that they believe he may have been planning to smuggle into the prison.
Sources say police recovered 20 cell phones and over 800 cigarettes.
A prison source told Guardian Media that the senior officer had worked for some time at the Maximum-Security Prison(MSP) and was later transferred to the Remand Prison.
Sources say the officer in question is a supervisor at the Remand Prison.
