South African sailor, Victor Hempel is heading to Trinidad after his yacht was rescued off the Dominican Republic, drifting without power for 48 hours since Boxing Day.
The rescue vessel, the M/V Industrial Courage, picked up a distress call from the boat Ayisha with the lone sailer, Victor Hempel, who reported that his engines had stalled and suffered battery failure.
The MV Industrial Courage's captain Jan Frerichs of the ZEAMARINE line received a distress signal on December 29 from the yacht which ran into difficulty near Hispanola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
The boat's generator also ceased to function leaving the boat's sole occupant unable to steer the boat which was enroute to Anguilla from Jamaica on December 26th.
The ZEAMARINE vessel is currently towing the yacht to Trinidad. Both vessels are expected to arrive on Friday, January 4.
Huggins Shipping Group, agents for Zeamarine, are in contact with local authorities to ensure the Hempel, is taken care of upon arrival.
