One hundred and twenty casual and temporary workers employed with the Siparia Regional Corporation (SRC) would be given the axe on Monday.
Chairman of the SRC Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh said the regional body has no choice since there is not enough money in the coffers to pay workers a total of $80,000 in wages for the fortnight.
Ramadharsingh said the CEO of the SRC has prepared the termination letters and would be given to the unfortunate workers on Monday.
Ramadharsingh said the administrative arm of the SRC met on Thursday to come up with solutions, including the application for an emergency fund from the Ministry of Local Government, to bail out the workers.
However, Ramadharsingh said this plan was not successful.
He said the council would be having an emergency meeting on Monday at 9 am to discuss this latest predicament.
He said the council had been starved for funds by Central Government and he has appealed to the Prime Minister to intervene.
