Immigration Detention Centre detainee, Grenadian Rayan Bowen, 25, who escaped from the facility on July 10 had been recaptured on August 11 and charged with firearm and ammunition offences.
However, during his court appearance the magistrate sent him to the St Ann's Mental Hospital for evaluation after he was "acting up."
After two weeks at the institution, Bowen escaped some time between 7 and 8 pm on Thursday. It is believed that Bowen used a hacksaw blade to cut the bars in the ward.
A search is on for Bowen who is still on the run.
Terron Gilchrist, chief executive officer of North West Regional Health Authority, confirmed that the patient was in Ward 27—the Forensic Ward—and it is believed that he escaped via an abandoned section in the ward.
Police and hospital security were contacted.
According to Gilchrist, the Forensic Ward accommodates people who are sent from the court for psychiatric evaluation and assessment.
Days after Bowen's IDC escape, PC Seeteram along with other officers from the Tunapuna CID executed a search at a house at Mount Hope Road on August 11. Bowen was arrested and police seized a Glock 19 pistol and 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition found on a couch in the living room area.
He subsequently appeared before a Tunapuna magistrate who ordered that he be sent to the St Ann's.
On July 10, Bowen was among 12 that escaped the IDC some time between 3 pm and 5 pm during the airing period. This was the fourth incident in the last six months. Sources at IDC told Guardian Media that the men escaped the facility after cutting two chain-link fences on the northern side of the detention facility.
He was also one of four convicted criminals that were due to be deported after serving time in jail.
Sources close to the investigation told Guardian Media that Venezuelan nationals Henny Quiroz, Nelson Jose Mendoza, Luis Angel Quiroz and Bowen served time for a series of offences which included firearms possession and possession of ammunition.
Mendoza, Quiroz(H) and Luis Quiroz were convicted of possession of a firearm while Bowen was convicted for possession of ammunition.
Two of the detainees who escaped on July 10—Venezuelan nationals Charlie Perez Jose and Claudio Flores were found in a forested area and escorted back into the facility at about midnight that same day.
