A woman, who police believe is responsible for Monday’s multi-million dollar fire at Fashion City in Point Fortin, has been arrested.
The 49-year-old woman of School Trace, Point Fortin, was held by police around midday on Tuesday in the Point Fortin area.
Investigators questioned her about Monday’s fire and other incidents in the community.
However, police said they have to gather additional evidence before she could be charged in connection with Monday’s fire.
The woman was eventually charged yesterday with three offences unrelated to Monday’s fire.
She later appeared virtually before a magistrate charged with threatening to burn a building, possession of drug apparatus and refusing to give her fingerprints. She was remanded into custody.
Following Monday’s fire, business owners expressed fear that a deranged arsonist was targeting businesses and homes in the area. Fashion City, the second arson attack on a business in the area, was completed engulfed in flames.
The owner Vidya Lalgeee secured the building and left around 5 pm.
Around 9.40 pm Point Fortin firefighters were alerted about a fire, but when they arrived the flames had already spread throughout the two-storey building.
The fire also damaged a neighbouring business, Maya’s building. In a telephone interview yesterday, owner Vishnu Kalliecharan claimed that earlier this week the arsonist started a fire outside of his business place and it was put out by a passer-by.
