The Opposition has called for wide private and public sector consultation on any projected work from home policy– including the costs of accommodating such operation.
And Government has signalled all aspects of the situation would be examined.
UNC MP Rudy Indarsingh yesterday called for such consultation after recent word that Government plans to examining such a policy.
Yesterday, Planning Minister Camille Robinson-Regis told Guardian Media that policy would be examined.
She had also recently said the policy will target public and private sectors. A consultant will be hired for the project which will involve consultation from stakeholders including public officers and unions.
Indarsingh said the idea was “laughable, late in coming and lamentable...this comes over an entire year after T&T was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic and several portions were forced to work from home. It comes long after when such policy is really needed– and it comes when the economy is reopening.”
He added: “Government failed students miserably regarding a proper learning from home system. So we must be wary of their inability to implement a proper work from home agenda. Improper implementation– the hallmark of this PNM government–will impact how citizens access public goods and services, such as passports, vehicle registration, taxes, birth certificates, and more.”
He added, "Given that Government is TT’s largest employer any such policy will influence what the private sector seeks to do with its staff. With whom has Government consulted regarding this ?....There must be widespread consultation with stakeholders in public and private sectors."
