Police officers who went to execute a search warrant at a house in San Juan say they had no choice but to open fire on its occupant after he refused to drop a gun he was holding.
The man, who was identified as Ricky George, 40, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Eric Williams Medical Complex in Mount Hope.
According to a police report, at about 3.30 pm on Sunday, officers assigned to the North Eastern Division went to George's Sawmill Avenue, San Juan home.
Police said when they arrived at the house George pointed a gun at them. The officers demanded that he drop his weapon but he refused. The police opened fire on him, hitting him twice about the upper body. Police officers subsequently seized a loaded 9mm pistol.
Relatives who were at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday refused to comment on the incident.
Investigations are continuing.
