After a three-year hiatus, the Scarborough Cup returned to the Mt Irvine Golf Course, Tobago, yesterday. Haroon Joseph, Tournament Director of Caribbean Swing Promotions, said he was pleased that the the 15th edition of the Cup was once again held at Mt Irvine.
Joseph said 38 teams comprising 76 players from T&T, Canada and Barbados are challenging for honours, the winners and runners up would go on to participate in the Sir Garry Sobers Festival of Golf carded for May 3-5 in Barbados. He said the prize would include entry, accommodations, flights and rental cars.
The format for the game was a shotgun start, two-ball better ball competition. The first wave of players teed off at 7 am, while the second group started at 12 noon. Today's tee-off is at 7 am at the Magdelena Grand Golf Course.
Bill Ramrattan, the president of the Brechin Castle Golf Club, who lead 10 teams to the event, said he was happy to once again play at Mt Irvine. Ramrattan who won the Tobago Open three decades ago, said coming to Mt Irvine was a welcome sight and he hoped the facility would soon rise to the glory it experienced in its heyday. Jeffery Azar, the representative of the T&T Golf Association, said he too was glad to see competitions taking place at Mt Irvine. The last event held at the Magdelena Grand Golf Course was won by the Tobago team of William Shaw and Saul Joannie
Joseph said the 17th staging of the South Caribbean Open would take place on September 13-15. He said both golf courses would be used for this event which is expected to attract the top golfers in the country who would challenge for top honours in the championship, super seniors and first divisions for men and a championship division for ladies.
He said the event closes off with a final division for players with middle to a higher handicap category which would also include junior players.
Joseph said Caribbean Swing Promotions would also be involved in the upcoming Chief Secretary's Charity Golf Tournament carded for May 2 to June 2.
