Make­da Bain, the run­ner-up in the just con­clud­ed Con­fed­er­a­tion of Ten­nis of Cen­tral Amer­i­ca and the Caribbean (COTECC) Trin­i­ty Cup Ju­nior Cir­cuit 14 and Un­der Tour­na­ment at the Na­tion­al Rac­quet Cen­tre at Or­ange Grove Road, Tacarigua, was among ten T&T play­ers to win their open­ing round-robin match­es when the Pow­er­ade Bar­ba­dos Un­der-12 and U-14 Ten­nis Tour­na­ment served off Sat­ur­day in St Michael, Bar­ba­dos.

Bain was in omi­nous form in the U-14 girls as she swept past Nyah Lange 4-0, 4-1 in their Group Five clash while fel­low T&T play­er, and dou­bles win­ner on lo­cal soil last Wednes­day, Ab­ba Camp­bell-Smith, ranked fifth al­so won in Group Five 4-0, 4-2 over Grena­da's Carmel Mc Lawrence.

There were al­so wins for fourth-ranked El­yse Fer­gu­son, and sec­ond-ranked Shiloh Walk­er in their re­spec­tive round-robin cur­tain-rais­ers against T&T's Anya Ro­many 4-1, 4-2 in Group Four, and Bar­ba­di­an Janae Layne, 4-0, 4-0 in Group Two.

Among the T&T boys who made the jour­ney across to Bar­ba­dos, Ryan Steuart, Josi­ah Hills, Jaiden Gor­mandy, Oliv­er Har­ra­gin, and Dar­ius Ra­haman all tast­ed vic­to­ry.

Steuart won his boys' U-12 Group One open­er against fel­low T&T play­er Fa­vian Dates 4-2, 4-and top-ranked Josi­ah Hills topped Bar­ba­di­an Caiden Wil­son 4-2, 4-0; in Group two, Gor­mandy de­feat­ed coun­try­man Eli Pat­ty 4-1, 4-2, and Har­ra­gin whipped home-town play­er Dmitri Ap­ple­whaite 4-1, 4-0, and in the U-14 age-group, Ra­haman pow­ered past Ba­jan Travis Licor­ish 4-2, 5-1 af­ter los­ing his open­er to An­tigua and Bar­bu­da's Khalil Roberts, 1-4, 2-4.

How­ev­er, Ja­cob Jacelon was beat­en in both his U-14 boys' match­es on the day, first go­ing un­der to An­tigua and Bar­bu­da's Gio­van­ni Quinn 0-4, 2-4; and al­so, against Bar­ba­di­an Ethan Warn­er, 1-4, 2-4 to fall out of con­tention to ad­vance while in U-12 en­coun­ters, Jack Brown fell to St Lu­cian Den­ney Es­ta­va 1-4, 2-4, and Ab­hishek Ramdeen came up short against Cruz Thorn­ton, 1-4, 4-1, 2-4.

The tour­na­ment con­tin­ues to­day with round-robin pool match­es at the end of which the top two play­ers in each pool will ad­vance to the main draw knock­out stage which be­gins lat­er to­day as well.
