Makeda Bain, the runner-up in the just concluded Confederation of Tennis of Central America and the Caribbean (COTECC) Trinity Cup Junior Circuit 14 and Under Tournament at the National Racquet Centre at Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua, was among ten T&T players to win their opening round-robin matches when the Powerade Barbados Under-12 and U-14 Tennis Tournament served off Saturday in St Michael, Barbados.
Bain was in ominous form in the U-14 girls as she swept past Nyah Lange 4-0, 4-1 in their Group Five clash while fellow T&T player, and doubles winner on local soil last Wednesday, Abba Campbell-Smith, ranked fifth also won in Group Five 4-0, 4-2 over Grenada's Carmel Mc Lawrence.
There were also wins for fourth-ranked Elyse Ferguson, and second-ranked Shiloh Walker in their respective round-robin curtain-raisers against T&T's Anya Romany 4-1, 4-2 in Group Four, and Barbadian Janae Layne, 4-0, 4-0 in Group Two.
Among the T&T boys who made the journey across to Barbados, Ryan Steuart, Josiah Hills, Jaiden Gormandy, Oliver Harragin, and Darius Rahaman all tasted victory.
Steuart won his boys' U-12 Group One opener against fellow T&T player Favian Dates 4-2, 4-and top-ranked Josiah Hills topped Barbadian Caiden Wilson 4-2, 4-0; in Group two, Gormandy defeated countryman Eli Patty 4-1, 4-2, and Harragin whipped home-town player Dmitri Applewhaite 4-1, 4-0, and in the U-14 age-group, Rahaman powered past Bajan Travis Licorish 4-2, 5-1 after losing his opener to Antigua and Barbuda's Khalil Roberts, 1-4, 2-4.
However, Jacob Jacelon was beaten in both his U-14 boys' matches on the day, first going under to Antigua and Barbuda's Giovanni Quinn 0-4, 2-4; and also, against Barbadian Ethan Warner, 1-4, 2-4 to fall out of contention to advance while in U-12 encounters, Jack Brown fell to St Lucian Denney Estava 1-4, 2-4, and Abhishek Ramdeen came up short against Cruz Thornton, 1-4, 4-1, 2-4.
The tournament continues today with round-robin pool matches at the end of which the top two players in each pool will advance to the main draw knockout stage which begins later today as well.
