Barrackpore East Secondary School repeat as PowerGen Girls champions when they defeated Holy Name Convent by five wickets in the finals at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, San Fernando last evening.
Batting first Holy Name Convent made 83 for nine off their 20 overs with national youth player Jesse Ferdinand scoring 19. Also getting among the runs was Saarah Olton who made a quickfire 15. Bowling for Barrackpore Suriya Sookoo grabbed three wickets for 20 runs.
When Barrackpore took to the crease to chase the target, they were aided by a number of wides sent down by Ferdinand. She had 14 wides in her first over (2 runs were give for each wide). After this Barrackpore was always on top and Sookoo, who would go on to cop the player of the match award, then scored 13 runs to ensure the win. Skipper Shalini Samaroo also got into double figures.
However, extras were the highest scorer in the innings, numbering 51. Olton tried her best and finished with 2/16 but it was not enough to give her team victory.
