Alex Ekesa crossed the line in a time of 18 minutes and 25 seconds, and Shian Lewis clocked 25.37 to be the men’s and women’s winners of the Port-of-Spain City Corporation’s 6k Road Race, Sunday.
The event, held as part of the 110th anniversary of the Restoration of Civic Rights to the People of Port-of-Spain, saw some 100 participants, both men and women, take the start, but the pair of Ekeka and Lewis proved to be a cut above the rest.
Following, overall winner Ekesa was Nicholas Romany, the rising T&T road race talent at 28 years, taking the silver medal in 18.31 and Tafari Waldon completing the top three men finishers in 19.35. A number of the country’s road race talents were also featured, such as Collin Pereira, Donnell Francis, David Herbert, and Darius Harding, all of whom occupied positions fourth to seventh at the 19.47, 20.22 and 20.55, respectively on the afternoon.
Among the women, Lewis finished 24th overall ahead of Chantel Le Maitre, who stormed home for the runner-up spot as well as the 26th finisher overall in 25.52, beating many male counterparts on her way. Juliet John-Sambrano was the third woman in 26.38 while April Francis, Ashleigh Thomas, Shari Thomas, and Felicia Aguillera secured positions fourth to seventh in 28.04, 28.10, 29,03 and 29.20, respectively.
This event was considered a vibrant celebration of the community, its cultural diversity, and its commitment to healthy living.
Alderman Chinua Alleyne, Mayor of Port-of-Spain, led the charge, lacing up his running shoes alongside other dedicated members of the City Council. Their participation exemplified the spirit of unity and civic pride that defines our city.
