James Hadden stunned fourth-seed Jaylon Chapman when action in the Boys Under-14 Singles of the Lease Operators Ltd Junior Tennis Tournament continued at the Country Club in Maraval, yesterday.
Though he was unexpected to come away victorious going into the contest, Hadden, considered a top junior in local tennis, went a set down in the opener 2-4. But he stormed back in the second set 4-1 before prevailing in the play-off 10-6 in the round-robin stage.
Kale Dalla Costa, the boys Under-12 winner last year, was also triumphant yesterday, beating number two seed Tim Pasea in straight sets 4-2, 5-3, along with Tyler Hart who turned back Daniel Jaery 4-1, 5-4(5) and Luca Denoon who stopped Thomas Chung 4-2, 3-5, 10-6.
Also in winner's row were Nathen Martin defeating Neil Maraj 4-0, 4-0: Alex Chin who beat Kadeem Charles 4-0, 4-0, and Zachery Byng prevailing over Rajesh Sharma 4-1, 4-2.
Later yesterday, Hart received his second win of the tournament when he clobbered Hadden 4-1, 5-3, while Jeary rebounded from his earlier loss by beating Chapman 4-1, 0-4 and 10-7.
In the Girls equivalent (u-14s) Zara Ghuran stopped Jaeda-Lee Daniel-Joseph in straight sets 4-1, 5-4(4) in her first match of the day, before whipping Christiana Halls in her second 4-0, 4-1. However, Daniel-Joseph made amends from her earlier loss by beating Jordane Dookie 4-1, 5-3.
Among the Under-12s Adam Wyatt, who won the u-10 division last year, was off to a perfect start by whipping Luke Rawlins 4-1, 4-0 on court three. However, he will have to keep his eyes open for B'jorn Hall, Yeshowah Smith, Josh Low and Marcos West, all of whom claimed victories over Yohance Solomon 4-5, 5-4, 10-5, Malcolm Smith 4-0, 4-2, Jovan Charles 4-1, 4-0 and Aaron Subero 4-1, 4-0 respectively.
Julian Rampaul and Kayden Siewrattan were also winners in the u-12 category yesterday, by disposing of Lucas Corbie 5-3, 5-3 and Rizwaan Mohammed4-1, 4-0. And among the Girls u-12s- there were wins for Kate Broughton over Sophie Abraham 1-4, 4-0, 10-6: Neila Maraj over Rayna Hayling 4-1, 4-2: Arya Siewrattan who defeated Zariah Rambaran 4-0, 4-1.
