Junior national champion Troy Llanos has already achieved a series of wins this season and on Sunday in Barbados was no different as he emerged the Sprint Division champion at the 29th annual National Triathlon Event at Brandon’s Beach, Spring Garden.
He along with several T&T's leading junior and senior men's and women's triathletes took on the regional and international competitors at the event hosted by the Barbados Federation of Island Triathletes.
In the Sprint category, athletes were required to swim 750 metres, followed by a 20K ride and a 5K run. Llanos, a Form Five student of Fatima College, emerged the overall winner in a time of one hour, four minutes and 33 seconds.
Llanos, who trains with The Braves and under the direction of coaches, Jonah Camps and Gene Samuel, has concluded a stellar racing year. He was also the national junior aquathlon and duathlon champions this year and went on to win two gold medals in the recently concluded Carifta Games in Jamaica in August.
Joining him on the podium was teammate Logan Raymond (1:09:04), who placed third overall. Chad Hosein (1:11:05) also of the Braves, placed fourth overall in the Sprint category.
T&T had a strong contingent and secured several podium finishes in the event, also copping several age-group first-place finishes.
In the Try-a-Tri category, athletes were required to swim 350 m, ride 10K and run 2.5K and local junior athlete Kaya Rankine Beadle handled the course well winning in 41.21 with Rachel Grosberg in second place in 42.03.
Lara Littlepage (2:41:34) and Gina Hart (2:45.27) were among several senior athletes taking on the Olympic Category and the local duo excelled placing second and third, respectively. In the category, each athlete was required to swim 1.5K, followed by a 40K ride and a 10K run.
