T&T's Special Olympics athletes departed Piarco International airport yesterday for the World Games in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates taking place between March 14 and 21st. The group included 31 athletes across the sporting disciplines of athletics, bocce, powerlifting, swimming and equestrian. Along with the athletes are 11 coaches that accompany the team as well as two officials.
T&T's contingent contains some experience as well as newcomers. Nikoli Lalla, third from left in the front row, has won three gold, a silver and a bronze at previous World Games. Stefan Singh, second from right in the front row, is also an open water silver medalist. Latoya Charles, second from left in the back row, won gold medal at the Special Olympics World Games in China in 2007. Posing with the team on the right in the middle row is Alicia Hospedales, Senior Government Relations and Affairs Executive - Digicel Foundation which is a major sponsor of Special Olympics of T&T athletes.
