Two-time national champion Nabeel Mohammed of UWI Tennis Club powered his way to the Men's A Division singles title in the East Clubs Classified Tennis Tournament at the Trinidad Country Club, Long Circular Road, Maraval on Sunday.
Mohammed, the tournament defending champion, pulled off a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over a resilient Akiel Duke, who did not fade after dropping the first set. Mohammed, who defeated Duke in the 2019 National Championship game, needed a battle through a tie-breaker to complete the victory in the intense final, to hold off the second-seeded Tobagonion who book his spot in the title match with a 6-1, 6-3, semi-final result against national Under-18 champion Ethan Wong.
The Men's B Division singles title match was just as exciting with Kale Dalla Costa emerging with a victory over Clint Singh. He won the opening set 4-0 but Singh recovered just enough to seal the second set 4-5, forcing a tie-breaker and though Singh gave an applauding performance it was Dalla Costa closing the tiebreaker win, 13/11.
Singh did not go home empty-handed combining with Adisa Idemudia to claim the division's doubles title after taking down the pair of Isiah Boxill and Beckham Sylvester, 4-1, 5-3.
Yeshowah Smith emerged a double champion in the Men's C Division. He prevailed against Deron Dumas in the singles final, 4-2, 4-5, 10/6. Smith and Dumas then linked in the doubles title match-up against duo Brian Harricharan and Kadeem Williams and won 4-5, 4-1, 10/6.
National champion Carlista Mohammed and partner Jordane Dookie won the Women's A Division doubles title against Zara Ghuran and Trevine Sellier, by walkover.
However, the unseeded Aalisha Alexis brought the curtain down on Saturday's programme behind a 7-6, (7), 6-3 score-line against challenger and unseeded Jordane Dookie of UWI Tennis club to win the Women’s A division singles title. Alexis, the national Under-18 champion, reached the final after a 7-5, 3-6, (11-9) semi-final win over the national and Tranquility Open champion Mohammed, who was the tournaments number-one seed.
Em-Miryam Campbell-Smith and Aeryn Daniel-Joseph were the other single crowned champions yesterday in their respective divisions.
In the Women's B division, Campbell-Smith defeated Areatha Francis, 4-1, 4-2 while in the C category, Daniel-Joseph beat Kennedi Mc Phee, 5-3, 5-3.
The Smith family, the brother and sister players of Yeshowah and Em-Miryam, who won singles and doubles titles, and the rest of their teammates helped Total Tennis Academy emerge as the top club. The tournament which was opened to all clubs for the first time attracted 132 players.
