Mukesh Ramsingh, Aaron Woolford and Kendon Cornwall each earned quarterfinal berths in the Chetwynd End of Year Tennis Tournament's men's singles division when action continued this weekend at the club's court on Tunapuna Road, Tunapuna.
Ramsingh outclassed Rendell Ackie in straight sets, 6-2 6-3, while Cornwall pulled off a hard-fought victory over Kevon Baptiste 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the tiebreak, to strengthen his position for a first-ever Chetwynd men's title.
Meanwhile, number two seed Woolford turned back a battling Vaughn Martin 6-2 6-0 to be among the top eight players in the play-offs. Martin, an ex volleyball standout who also played basketball, may feel contented with his performances to date, considering his hands have had much more successes in other sports.
In the Mixed Doubles, the pair of Kino Francis and Sarah Salandy, the number one seed who are favoured to take home the title, did not disappoint on the day, whipping the team of Angela Agard and Malcolm Reid 6-4, 6-4 to earn a semifinal berth.
Salandy and Francis were joined in the semifinals by the combined force of Brenda Alleyne and Randy Bailey who prevailed over the team of Cliff Meade and Maryam Abdullah-Mohammed 6-3 6-0.
Ramsingh, despite his success in the singles, could not replicate that when he paired with Valerie Matas in the mixed doubles, going down to the team of Adisa Idemudia and Aretha Francis 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
Meanwhile, the duo of Askia Richards and Alicia Cooper also advanced to the tournament's semifinal play-off, courtesy a 6-1 6-1 triumph over the pair of Cherry Lapaix and Narad Ramsingh.
