Faced with millions of dollars in damages incurred in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Karen, president of Soroptimist International of San Fernando Bebe Ajodha says the club will meet soon to discuss what kind of assistance will be given to flood victims.
In an interview, Ajodha said an executive meeting will be held on Thursday.
Following last year’s floods, the Club assisted residents of Kernaham village near Mayaro with hampers and other supplies.
During a Nautical and Nice fundraiser held at the Achievers Banquet Hall on Sunday, Ajodha said the club has been involved in several activities including the GROW II project.
GROW means Girls Restoring Our World.
“This project was executed at a Children’s home in Woodland where the children were taught about pollution and its effects on animals. We also have our free mammograms project which enables women in need between the ages of 40-50 to get mammograms done at a Medical Clinic. This was the first time these women had a mammogram. It was our way of supporting and preventing breast cancer,” she added.
Apart from assisting flood victims, Ajodha said there are also mental health programmes for students.
She said the Club will continue to embark on programmes aimed at helping those in need.
Ajodha said Soroptimist International has consultative status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations (UN), which gives a voice on important discussion papers, and allows this country to attend the Commission on the Status of Women in New York each year in March, and contribute to the “Agreed Conclusions”.
“This status would not be possible without the fantastic work being done by Soroptimists across the globe who focuses on economic empowerment, education, environmental sustainability, food security and healthcare as well as violence and conflict resolution.
