It’s boiling down crunch time in the Coca Cola InterCol competition with the various zonal finals already set for this week.
And on Tuesday, the semifinals of the Tobago Zone will be on show with a double header at the Plymouth Recreation Ground from 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm respectively. The matches were originally set to take place today but insufficient match officials caused a postponement of the proceedings for a day later.
In the first game, Speyside will clash with Scarborough Secondary while in the second encounter multiple-time Tobago winners Signal Hill Secondary will have a date with Goodwood High.
Speyside coach Kerry Lynch said on Sunday that his team will be going after their fifth title in eight years, a feat which will separate them from Signal Hill.
“We won the title for four years straight back in 2012- 2015, while Signal Hill took the Tobago crown for the next three years in 2016-2018, so I think the boys really want to claim their fifth title before Signal Hill can have the opportunity to win it for a fourth time in recent time,” Lynch said.
The irony, however, is that the two teams could be on a collision course after tomorrow’s round of matches unless an upset takes place.
The Speyside coach said his team, the only school from the sister-isle in the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), is confident of going past their opponents Scarborough Secondary when they meet.
“Our strengths are in attack with our midfielders and strikers, but we do not want to be overconfident, that is the one thing we want to guard against,” Lynch noted.
He also brushed aside the perception that his team prefers to face Scarborough Secondary in the final rather than Signal Hill, saying “It doesn’t matter who we will face in the final because we will be ready for anyone. We have been training all week for tomorrow’s match, and we will also do a light workout this afternoon.”
