T&T’s women’s footballers were left heartbroken long before they took the field in what should have been a crucial CONCACAF Olympic Qualifier against the Dominican Republic at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva on Monday.
The match ended 0-0 but T&T were instead left to rue their under-par performance against St Kitts/Nevis on Sunday, where they were thrashed 4-1, a result which meant they had virtually surrendered the lone spot to advance from the group.
With six points heading into yesterday’s encounter, T&T skipper Karyn Forbes and her teammates needed St Kitts and Nevis to be either lose or be held to a draw against Antigua and Barbuda yesterday, while T&T themselves needed to win handsomely.
However, St Kitts and Nevis women did not cooperate and put tears in the Soca Princesses’ eyes by hammering Antigua and Barbuda 10-0 in the opening match-up yesterday. In any event, the T&T women later failed to honour their part of the responsibility after being held to a goalless draw.
St Kitts and Nevis were led by a hat-trick from Cloey Uddenberg in the 8th, 21st and 36th minute, as well as double strikes from Brittney Lawrence in the 63rd and 71st minutes and Phoenetia Browne in the 38th and 48th.
Entering the match with a one-point difference on the T&T women, Josanna Williams quickly handed St Kitts and Nevis the advantage with her item in the fourth minute and literally opened the floodgates thereafter, as they scored goals at will. The other St Kitts and Nevis goal came from Caroline Springer in the 58th.
In their encounter, T&T created a few attempts at goal but could not get the ball in the back of the net.
The result meant St Kitts and Nevis, who had won their first-ever game against a T&T team, won the group with 10 points while the Dominican Republic finished second with eight points. T&T secured third spot with seven points.
