The Glenn Mendez trained Whisper Light, the defending champion of the Stewards Cup, which he won emphatically last year, will again be set for the prize this season.
Whisper Light, who ran a blinder last time out, looks like he is coming back to his best at just the right time for Saturday's engagement. Whisper Light heads a field of 11 horses for which the fifth subscription was paid.
Mendez has been quietly bringing Spoke In Yuh Wheel to his best and he could play a big part in this event. Mendez has won this event for the Ahamads on two occasions with Control Unit.
However, this year, he will have stiff competition with the John O'Brien trained General JN in the line-up.
The General, which is better over shorter distances, was beaten last time out when he attempted to take on Juice Man in the Champion Stakes where he did his stablemate Apocalypse huge favour with the latter coming at the death to snatch victory and stopping the hitherto unbeaten Juice Man in the process.
Though losing his first start for this season, General JN will be difficult to peg back over 1,200 metres and could go all the way. O'Brien is a past-master at winning this event and this year could be another success story for him.
Trainer Harriram Gobin must fancy his chances in this Grade One event with his pair of Nuclear Power and Master of War. Both of his charges have shown improved form over the past two months and could play a big part in this year's edition of the "Sprint Championship of The Caribbean".
Trainer Rolf Bartolo has been improving his horses steadily and Rio Ponti could play a major part in this event, should he continue to improve. This horse won well two weeks ago but played up in the stalls last time out and finished second. He could prove a different proposition this time around.
O'Brien also has the speedy Pauseforacoors and Thisonesforron engaged and though both have not been at their absolute best they must be respected.
O'Brien will no doubt be expecting them to move forward once again, in what will be an intriguing contest, come this weekend.
