Couva South MP Rudranath Indarsingh believes that police officers are not making enough use of the breathalyser.Indarsingh said in light of the spate of road carnage every weekend, he wants the Commissioner of Police to put steps in place to ensure that more breathalyser tests be carried out on motorists.Indarsingh was at the time addressing a town meeting in his constituency at Calcutta Settlement, Mc Bean, yesterday morning.Indarsingh, who is Minister in the Ministry of Labour and Small and Micro-Enterprise Development, said he was appalled at the spate of road carnage. He said for the past two weeks members of the public had to awaken to news that four or more people were killed in accidents.
Indarsingh said when the breathalyser was introduced, police officers were using the instrument and arrests were made.He also said the Government was committed to delivering the second batch of laptops to graduates of the 2011 SEA exams. This exam is scheduled to take place tomorrow. He said: "Come the new education term in September 2011, the PP government, through the Prime Minister, will continue to deliver by ensuring the second batch of laptop computers to successful SEA students will be distributed."Indarsingh also wished success to those writing the exams.
Indarsingh said that Government had taken a decision not to pave roads for simply for satisfying people, unless the proper drainage and supporting infrastructural development first took place. This includes the laying of new water mains where necessary.Unless proper infrastructure was in place, he said, the accumulation of water because of poor drainage would undermine the road works in less than a year.He said the Lower McBean Recreation Ground would be getting lighting soon.Indarsingh said he had also provided a list of grounds to be lit in his constituency. He said infrastructural work in his constituency had resulted in a considerable decrease in flooding.
