It is very sad to see the financial state of our present economy in our beloved sweet T&T.
This was a disaster waiting to happen. The people are the ones that are going to feel the brunt of this debacle that we have found ourselves in. Everyone is blaming the shortfall in the energy sector and the drop in oil prices as the reasons for our dwindling economy.
This situation was created by the lack of vision by various governments' ineptness in diversifying our economy.
Most Caribbean countries' main source of their incomes/US dollars comes from tourism, yet our governments, past and present, never put any infrastructure in place to accommodate this industry.
Our sole dependence on oil was our downfall; no efforts were ever made to change our fiscal policies.
They never looked at the various changes in the world economy.
The political system only catered for themselves and neglected the cries of the people.
We should never have been in this present position. We are all shell-shocked by this sudden downfall in our economy. For years we were duped into believing that everything was honky-dory. Squandermania and lack of accountability soon led to our present day claims of bankruptcy.
It is going to be a tough road ahead for our people to pull out of this fiscal hole that was made by the politicians. We gave them the reins to govern our beloved country and they all failed miserably. So sad!
