Police yesterday shot and killed a Rio Claro man who they said opened fire on them.
According to officers of the Eastern Division, Sheldon "Scary" Jeremiah of Pasqual Trace, Rio Claro, was killed after shooting at the officers. Police said around 10 pm on Friday, officers of the Eastern Division received a report that a man was seen with a gun near a pool party along Jeffers Crossing, Tabaquite Road, Rio Claro. The officers said when they approached Jeremiah, he opened fire on them and ran off. The officers managed to fire off a few rounds in Jeremiah's direction but missed him. When he fled from them on Friday night, police said he dropped a Seven Shooter semi-automatic shotgun which they recovered.
They said Jeremiah was wanted for questioning in connection with recent robberies, murders and other serious offences in the Eastern Division. Police said Jeremiah was recently released from prison having served a seven-year sentence for armed robbery.
Around 7 am yesterday, members of the Eastern Division Task Force along with officers from the Eastern Division returned to the scene of the shooting when they saw Jeremiah, who they said had a sawed-off shotgun in his hand and was walking with another man.
Police said they called on Jeremiah to surrender but he fired at them, forcing them to return fire. After the shooting stopped, Jeremiah was dead and his accomplice had run off. ASP Nisha is continuing enquiries.
