The events surrounding Randall Rampersad's murder took another turn yesterday as a mysterious fire engulfed his home in Malgretoute Village, Princes Town, hours after his funeral.
Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, Rampersad's family, who live in a house opposite his, expressed concern for their safety.
When Guardian Media visited, a relative who requested anonymity said after Rampersad was murdered last Wednesday, they could not sleep.
"On Saturday we had his funeral and we cremated him at Mosquito Creek. That night some hours after we went to bed, his house burnt down," the relative said.
Saying Rampersad's funeral was "horrible," the distraught relatives said they were puzzled as to why anyone would want to kill him. The relative said he had no runnings with the law and never interfered with anyone.
Moments before he died, Rampersad managed to tell his family that he did not know the men who stabbed him. He said the assailants were strangers who accosted him as he went to take a late-night shower in an outdoor bathroom near his home at about 11 pm on Wednesday.
After being stabbed in the chest and abdomen, Rampersad ran across the road and collapsed in a garage. He suffered a punctured lung and died at the Princes Town District Health Facility.
Police suspect Rampersad's death was linked to a domestic dispute involving a woman. They are now searching for the suspect. Anyone with information on Rampersad's murder can contact CrimeStoppers at 800-TIPS.
