T&T sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye led from the start to win the women's 60 metres at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, USA, on Sunday.
It was the start of the IAAF World Indoor Tour and Ahye (Adidas) clocked 7.21 seconds to beat Americans Shania Collins (7.27) and Aaliyah Brown (7.36), respectively. Filling the other spots in the competitive race were Jamaican Schillonie Calvert-Powell (7.38) in fourth, USA's Felicia Brown (7.45) in fifth and British Virgin Islands' Tahesia Harrigan-Scott (7.56) in sixth.
Local middle-distance runner Tonya Nero of Shocker Track Club was also active on the weekend at the Pittsburg State Invitational. She competed in the women's 3,000m and placed fourth in 9:41.13.
On the collegiate scene, there were a number of successes by T&T athletes at various track and field meetings in the United States.
At the Clemson Bob Pollock Invitational in South Carolina, Portious Warren, a senior at the University of Alabama (UA), won gold in the women's shot put event with her best throw measuring 17.28m.
Her schoolmate Mauricia Prieto had success on the track, winning the women's 300m in 38.03 then the junior student-athletes was part of the 4x400m relay team that won gold in 3:38.24.
Also at the Clemson meet, Sarah Wollaston of the University of Central Florida placed 18th in the women's 200m timed final after winning seventh and final section in 25.17.
The sophomore also raced in the 60m and her 7.68-clocking earned her fourth place in the first of four heat to place 15th in the preliminary round.
At the Indiana University Relays, Tennessee Tech junior Lisa Wickham placed first in the women's 60m final in 7.50 after qualifying for the medal race with the same time, the fastest of all qualifiers
Wickham was fifth in the 200m final in 24.48 and she and her relay team had a fifth-place finish in the 4x400m final in 3:55.33.
Senior Khemani Roberts was also part of Tennessee Tech's relay outfit. It was one of four events, the Tobago-born athlete raced in but she was not among the medals in any. She placed seventh in the 60m hurdles (9.03), ninth in the 200m timed final in 24.90 and over on the field, she was seventh in the long jump (5.69m).
At the Penn State National meet in Pennsylvania, Aaron Lewis of Coppin State University copped a silver medal in the 60m hurdles in 7.78. The junior's time increased after each stage, clocking 7.96 in the preliminaries and 7.80 in the next round.
At the Razorback Invitational in Arizona, two T&T athletes had podium finishes. Louisiana State University Akanni Hislop won the men's 20om (20.96) with Dwight St Hillaire of the University of Kentucky bagging bronze with 21.13. Xavier Mulugata, an LSU junior, also competed in the race and he was 25th in 22.58.
Each of them raced in the 200m and it was Hislop emerging with the best finish, placing seventh in 6.79, St Hillaire was 16th (6.90) and Mulugata 25th (7.01). St Hillaire and his UK teammates just missed out on a medal in the 4x400m relay, placing fourth in 3:11.51.
At the North Dakota Indoor Open, Jada Barker of Bemidji State University finished second in the women's 200m in 25.65, was fourth in the 60m (7.86) and got gold in the 4x400m relay (3:58.30).
Two more local athletes were in action at the Texas Tech Classic in Lubbock over the weekend but neither had top three placings.
Texas Christian University (TCU) freshman Jenea Spinks was 10th in the women's 60m in 7.48 while Arizona State University Junior Jeminise Parris was 35th (8.01). Parris also line-up in the 60m hurdles and she placed 17th (8.81).
At the NJCAA level, Cherisse Murray of Central Arizona University copped silver in the women's shot put with a 15.88-throw at the Paradise Valley Indoor Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona.
