ST AUGUSTINE, Trinidad– Opener Kamil Pooran and Sadique Henry struck contrasting half-centuries as Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners produced a gallant effort, before crashing to a 61-run loss to CWI Academy on Saturday’s final day of their fifth round match in the West Indies Championship.
Resuming the day at the Frank Worrell Memorial Ground on 72 without loss in pursuit of 386, CCC carried the game deep into the final session before being dismissed for 324.
The 27-year-old Pooran, unbeaten at the start on 49, top-scored with an up tempo 88 off 99 deliveries while Henry, 29, struck 63.
Yannick Ottley (43), Demario Richards (41) and opener Damel Evelyn (39) all chipped in as CCC threatened throughout the day, reaching 184 for three at lunch and 262 for five at tea.
However, the 124 runs required in the final session proved beyond them, left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop grabbing two of the last five wickets to fall to end with four for 93 and carry his wickets tally for the campaign to 29.
Fast bowler Kadeem Alleyne, who accounted for both openers, along with captain Shamarh Brooks for a five-ball ‘duck’, finished with three for 44.
CCC continued from where they left off the previous evening, Pooran and Evelyn extending their opening stand to 121 before being separated, when Alleyne trapped Evelyn lbw just following the first hour of play.
The right-handed Pooran, who struck 13 fours and a six, put on a further 34 for the second wicket with Henry before departing with a century in sight, mis-timing a pull and skying to short mid-wicket.
When Brooks was struck in front, CCC had lost two wickets for two runs in the space of eight deliveries to be 157 for three, but Henry and Richards combined in an 85-run fourth wicket stand to revive the chase.
Henry faced 131 balls and counted seven fours while Richards lashed five fours in a 66-ball innings.
Both batsmen were casualties as CCC lost three wickets for 26 runs to slip to 268 for wix with Bishop striking twice, but the Academy once again met resistance when Ottley and Romario Greaves staged a fightback in a 44-run, seventh wicket partnership.
Greaves’s tragic run out – finding himself short at the striker’s end attempting a second run – signalled the death knell for CCC as they lost their last four wickets for just 12 runs.
Greaves guides Hurricanes to fourth win
KINGSTON – West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves narrowly missed out on triple figures as Leeward Islands Hurricanes needed just under three-quarters of an hour to complete a seven-wicket win over Jamaica Scorpions in their fifth round contest in Jamaica.
Resuming Saturday’s final morning at Sabina Park on 145 for three requiring only a further 42 for victory, Hurricanes coasted to their target without any further loss of wickets, the right-handed Greaves converting his overnight 62 into an unbeaten 94.
Jahmar Hamilton, who finished unbeaten on 21, struck the winning runs when he punched part-time off-spinner Kirk McKenzie to the extra cover boundary.
He and Greaves extended their fourth wicket stand to 74, the pair having come together late in Friday’s third day following the demise of opener Mikyle Louis for 57.
The 30-year-old Greaves, who made his debut in Australia earlier this year, faced 183 deliveries and struck five fours while Hamilton notched a single four in his 55-ball knock.
Hurricanes’ victory was their fourth of the West Indies Championship while Scorpions tasted their third defeat.
