Almost a year after a new traffic plan was implemented in San Fernando, taxi drivers are calling for it to be scrapped. President of the T&T Taxi Drivers Network Adrian Acosta said the group had raised their concerns with then Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack?Warner. And six months ago, the group met with ministry officials and made recommendations.
However, to date the group has not received any response from the ministry. Acosta led a silent protest at the corner of Mon?Chagrin and St James Streets yesterday. "We are protesting about the traffic plan implemented on?December 6, 2011.?We wrote a letter to then Minister of Works Jack?Warner highlighting that the new plan was creating traffic jam."
Speaking on behalf of taxi drivers plying the Chaguanas, Curepe and Port-of-Spain routes, Acosta said his group did a survey with those drivers and 90 per cent said the plan was a waste of time. "The new plan is affecting our ability to make an honest day's work."
He said if Works Minister Emmanuel George does not agree with the group's recommendations, then his group is calling on him to revert to the old plan. In the old plan drivers coming from St James Street used Mon Chagrin?Street to access High Street, but in the new plan the access road to High Street was changed to Penitence Street. Acosta said if no one in authority responds to their plight by next week the group will take their protest in front of George's office in Port-of Spain.
