Police seized two handguns that could be used as automatic weapons and arrested two men in Carenage on Monday, while two other men escaped on a pirogue.Police reports said four men were seen engaging in a transaction at the beach near Schuller Street, Carenage.Led by Inspectors Henry Dann, Thomas and Hospedales, Western Division officers Cpl Fritt and constables Benjamin, Edward and Outar went to the beach around 6.30 pm on Monday.
They saw a pirogue out at sea, two men swimming and two men on shore. When the police accosted the men, the two who were in the water swam towards the pirogue and escaped.One officer who was on the scene told the T&T Guardian it "was a real movie scene." He said the Coast Guard were contacted to intercept the pirogue, but the men managed to escape.The two who were on the shore, a 25-year-old Caroni man and a 32-year-old Carenage man, were arrested and are being put on ID parades throughout the division.
The men had two Austrian Glock 19 pistols and 34 rounds of ammunition. The men also had a laser light, an extended magazine capable of holding 25 rounds of ammunition, and a silencer.In an unrelated incident, Coast Guard officers arrested two men after they caught them trying to traffic 51.32 kilogrammes of marijuana with an estimated street value of $615,840.
Around 6.50 pm on Sunday, the Coast Guard intercepted a 20-foot pirogue near Chacachacare. On board, they found two white crocus bags containing five brown packages, each full of plant material resembling marijuana.A 57-year-old man of Carli Bay Road, Couva, and a 61-year-old man of San Ford Street, West California, were detained and are expected to appear in court this week.
