Four men are now in police custody after they were beaten by residents of San Francique following the robbery and assault of a doubles vendor on Saturday morning. Police said the men were beaten with their own cutlasses.
According to reports, at around 3 am, Ramsingh Kuarsingh, 45, and his wife, Mala, was at their Tenant Trace home preparing doubles to sell later that day.Four men, armed with cutlasses, stormed into the house and began to beat Kuarsingh, chopping him on the back and neck.
One of the men placed a cutlass at Mala's neck and demanded that she hand over the keys to their Toyota Hilux pick-up which was parked in front of their home.The men attempted to escape in the vehicle but were unable to get it started because it is equipped with a kill switch.
Kuarsingh alerted neighbours as the men tried to re-enter the house and they came out brandishing cutlasses and other weapons.The residents caught three of the men, beat them and held them until the police arrived. The other assailant escaped but was caught by police shortly after.
The suspects, ages 20 to 25, are from Wellington Road, Debe.
Kuarsingh, who is the brother of PC Ramsaran, of the Princes Town Police Station, was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated and discharged.
The four suspects are expected to be charged with assault and attempted robbery.
