The years of a lackadaisical attitude exhibited by those who are charged to defend our shores and to protect and serve our citizenry have come home to bite us.Our T&T has been sold out to complacency, to greed, to the desire for the easy un-earned dollar. We have been let down by the "sit in the station" police; the police who would not go out on the street if they can avoid it. And then it's too late if and when they do show up.
While we Trinis have to accept a lot of blame, I caution that there are too many undesirables entering this country on a daily basis, settling down and recruiting and destroying our youth. The guardians of our safety, the Immigration, Customs and Coast Guard, our first lines of defence are selling us short. Example? Check out a police raid that nets 20 prostitutes and you'll hear that only two of the 20 are Trinis.
How do we account for the 18 others who are here illegally and flourishing for months on end. And who return in a short while to resume business as usual. It's nothing but a revolving door. Our paradise is dead. As dead as the one-year-old infant who was recently beaten to death and callously tossed in a cesspit. As dead as the six-year-old innocent whose body was just found stuffed in a barrel. We are drowning in our shame. We should put aside all our trivial pursuits and rise up as one in angry protest.
But Carnival is just around the corner. Who has the time? 'Tis the season to be jolly. Heaven help us.
