It was like a scene from the movie Shawshank Redemption when prisons officers discovered a hole being dug by inmates in a cell at the Remand Yard of the Golden Grove Prison, Arouca.
To make matters worse, the inmate who is alleged to be assigned to the cell was said to have paid two other inmates to dig the hole in his cell.
Prisons officers said that had raised so many questions since the same cell was searched three weeks ago and several contraband items were found.
In an interview yesterday, prisons officers said the hole was to be used as a storage for illegal items.
All three inmates were taken away and placed in another cell block.
Prisons officers said they were concerned because the same inmate was being used as a cook instead of being disciplined.
It was reported that when the inmate cooks the food, he sells the remainder to other inmates for $100.
The officers, in their defence, said there were still problems with the ratio, 30:1100, of prison officers to inmates at the Remand Yard.
When contacted, several members of the Prisons Officers Association said they did not wish to comment on the issue.
Commissioner of Prisons Sterling Stewart said yesterday "nothing has come to my attention as yet."
