Police are continuing to monitor developments at the Barrackpore East Secondary School following the recent threats which disrupted classes.
Teachers and auxiliary staff are reporting for duty, but most students have stayed away except for those writing exams.
Frequent patrols were seen along the Papourie Road this morning.
Threats to shoot up the school and kill teachers as well as students were sent to two teachers and the school via email.
Education Minister, Dr Nyan Gadsby, has given assurances that her ministry is working along with the police to ensure students’ safety.
“We are doing everything we can and are cooperating with the police to ensure that our students’ safety is prioritised, and to ensure also that students who are undertaking term examinations are not unduly disadvantaged,” the education minister told Guardian Media.
She assured: “We are in constant contact with the police—both the cybersecurity unit, as well as the other units to ensure that whatever is required of us, we operationalise it to secure our students, and to ensure their educational continuity.”
The education minister strongly condemns the threats levelled against the school. She is urging anyone with information to come forward.
“It is a most heinous crime to do this,” Dr Gadsby-Dolly asserted.
“I want to appeal to all our citizens—if you know someone who is doing this, please report it to the police,” she urged.
On Monday, TUTTA's president Martin Lum Kin described the threats against Barrackpore East Secondary as “an act of terrorism” and “treason”.
