The preliminary inquiry against two policemen charged with the 2016 murder of San Fernando resident Adelle Gilbert began on Thursday.
Senior state attorney Angelica Teelucksingh tendered 44 witness statements as the inquiry against Constables Donald Snaggs and Peter Farnum got off the ground in the San Fernando First Magistrates Court. Snaggs is being represented by attorney Stephen Wilson while attorney Keith Beckles is representing Farnum.
The officers were charged last August, almost two years after Gilbert was shot and killed by the police near his Lawrence Street, San Fernando home.
The incident took place on October 20, 2016. Police alleged that Gilbert was armed with a gun and had fired at them.
However, his family demanded a full-scale investigation as they called for justice.
Part of the incident was captured by video footage and formed part of the police investigation.
The officers were charged by Snr Supt Kenneth Galindo of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations.
Teelucksingh also asked Senior Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor for summons for witnesses requested by the defence for cross-examination.
The matter was adjourned to August 22.
