Matthaus Wilford and Kristi Reno-Singh both representing Cristars claimed singles titles before partnering to claim the mixed doubles 18 and under division title in the Trinidad and Tobago Badminton Association (T&TBA) Junior Open. The three day tournament was played at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena (CRISA) last week and concluded on Sunday.Athletes contested 19 divisional titles between the ages of 11 and 18.Top seeded Wilford was the recipient of the divisional under 18 boy's singles title after defeating second seeded Jason Ramjass also of club Cristars 21-17, 21 16.
Wilford teamed up with another clubmate Vikesh Bahadoor to take the boys 18 and under doubles title over Richard Lalla and Sandeep Maharajh in a three set battle, 17-21 21-16, 21-15.In the mixed doubles title of the same age division, Reno-Singh and Wilford made easy work of Akeila Pascall and Junior Persad, both of SGSS to win, 21-13, 21-11.Reno-Singh was expected to take the under 18 girls singles title after defeating top-seeded Zuwena James in the semifinal. She did just that, crushing Sitara Persad, 21-12, 21-13.Reno Singh was also part of the girls doubles team in the 16 and under and the 18 and under divisions which claimed titles.
Partnering with Ashisha Persad, the duo easily defeated topseeded partnership Cindy Ramroop and Akeila Pascall 21-4, 21-6 in the 16 and under girls doubles.In the 18 and under girls doubles, Reno-Singh with the help of Sitara Persad cruised past the same opponents in Ramroop and Pascall, 21-14, 21-13.The junior T&TBA tournament follows the Senior version of the tournament which concluded on Thursday. Rahul Rampersad and Solange Labastide took the men's and women's singles titles.
