Daymian Stewart, former president of the T&T Volleyball Federation (TTVF), is one of five local officials in the sport who will be contesting for positions on the sport's top regional organisation commissions at the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Congress, this weekend.
Originally carded for June but postponed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the NORCECA Confederation 25th Congress will now take place from Saturday to Sunday, utilising a virtual platform from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Currently, TTVF boss Mushtaque Mohammed has already secured a position on the next NORCECA executive board for its four-year term after he was returned as the president of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) at their last annual general meeting held in Kingston, Jamaica, last November.
This weekend, NORCECA will complete the formalities of ratifying Mohammed in his executive position as a Vice President on the board of Administration at NORCECA for yet another term while he will also continue serving in the role of president of Development Commission; Member of the Sport Organising Commission and Beach Commission.
In addition to Mohammed, another long-serving official Stewart will be seeking re-election as secretary of the Beach Commission while other T&T national up for election include Aaron Pollard (Marketing Commission), Earlene Pereira (Internal Auditor), Brian Charles (Referees Commission), and Shelly Perryman-Pollard (Legal Commission), the latter of whom is the lone T&T person going up for positions on the respective commissions, not a member of the TTVF executive or a board member.
For the congress, NORCECA will be relying on the Zoom platform with the support of Central Caribe Sports for the diffusion of the Congress since around 75 delegates and participants are expected to be connected.
The 2020 Congress will be an elective one where the Dominican Cristobal Marte Hoffiz will be reelected as president of the entity he has chaired since 2001.
“The Congress will be held virtually in the face of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic that affects the entire world, but we will have the participation of the 41 National Federations and Territories, members of the Executive Committee, the staff of NORCECA besides the president and the Executive Director of FIVB,” Marte Hoffiz said.
The virtual working agenda includes two sessions on Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 6 pm while on October 25, it will be only one session from 10 am to 1 pm.
According to the agenda of the Congress, following the financial reports from the internal and external auditors, the messages from FIVB and NORCECA presidents and the reports from the 11 commissions, the elections will take place.
Marte Hoffiz confirmed that the 15 members of the Executive Committee and Board of Administration will have the responsibility to ratify the individuals presented by the presidency for the positions of first and second vice presidents, the general secretary and the treasurer.
Marte Hoffiz was elected president of NORCECA for the first time on October 30, 2001, following the resignation of the late Luis “Lulo” Mendoza, and since then he has been re-elected on four occasions.
Before the Congress, NORCECA will have is Executive Committee and Board of Administration on Friday from 10 am to 1 pm.
