A police anti-crime exercise in San Juan, conducted in response to reports of shooting in the area, has resulted in the seizure of two illegal firearms and a large cache of ammunition. Around 2 am, officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force, led by Sgt Cornelius Samuel, went to an abandoned shack at Bagatelle Extension Road, San Juan, where they made the discovery.
They found a 9 mm and a .380 pistol as well as a cache of ammunition which included several rounds of 7.62 calibre ammunition. The ammunition is used in automatic assault rifles. Ballistic testing is expected to be performed on the weapons to determine if they were used in recent shootings in the San Juan area.
No arrests were made, but investigators have identified two suspects from the area who are known to police as gang members. Police said the arrests of the suspects are imminent. Last Sunday, 22-year-old Derry "Monster" Dyette, of Bagatelle Extension, Febeau Village, San Juan, was killed during a shoot-out with police in front of the site of yesterday's raid. Dyette was said to be a member of the gang that the suspects also belong to. Also involved in the exercise were Cpls Darryl La Pierre and Kevin Titre.
